Amarillo Lot Striping: parking lot striping in Vega, Texas

Amarillo Lot Striping works in Vega, thirty-five minutes west of Amarillo on Interstate 40 and the seat of Oldham County. Vega is a small town with an interstate running through it, which gives it commercial property of a kind most towns under a thousand people never have: travel stops and fuel property where a semi and a family car use the same entrance.

Oldham County seat, interstate frontage

Vega is an incorporated city and the Oldham County seat, with its own ordinances and its own approval history, and the courthouse brings public-use parking demand that a town this size would not otherwise carry.

Accessibility runs through the Texas Accessibility Standards and TDLR as it does statewide, and it does not vary by county or by city size. On the small lots that make up most of the town that means one accessible space, and it has to be van accessible.

What the ground does here

Interstate frontage brings a condition the rest of this list mostly does not: fuel and truck traffic on lots that also carry cars. Tracked diesel and oil on the pavement is a bonding problem for both paint and sealer, and it concentrates exactly where the heavy vehicles stop and idle. Diesel that has sat on warm asphalt through a summer afternoon soaks in rather than staying on the surface, and no amount of pressure washing brings it back out. Those bays need degreasing and usually a primer, and it is worth budgeting for rather than discovering on the day.

The rest is the Panhandle norm, with the wind a little more relentless than in town because there is nothing west of here to slow it down. Caliche subgrade, high ultraviolet load, and freeze-thaw on anything left open through winter.

Where we work in Vega

The Interstate 40 frontage carries the fuel, travel and service property, and that is where most of the work is. In town, the courthouse square, the school and a short run of commercial frontage on the old Route 66 alignment make up the rest.

Lots that mix cars and trucks are the interesting design problem here. A fuel property where a semi and a family car share an entrance needs those paths genuinely separated on the ground, because when they are not, the truck path becomes whatever the driver can manage and the paint ends up recording it.

What we are usually asked for here

Entrance and circulation marking on interstate frontage property, separation of car parking from truck movement, degreasing and priming before anything is painted on fuel bays, and conventional restriping on the courthouse, school and in-town commercial lots.

The other recurring job out here is putting a layout back after paving work. Interstate frontage property gets patched and overlaid more often than in-town parking does, because it carries the traffic, and each time it happens the markings go with it. Recording the layout before the paving crew arrives turns what would be a full relayout into a straightforward restripe, and it is an hour of work that saves a good deal more.

Common Vega jobs:

  • I-40 frontage entrance, circulation and truck-path marking
  • Separation of car parking from truck movement on fuel and travel property
  • Diesel and oil contamination treatment ahead of striping or sealing
  • Oldham County courthouse and school lot restriping
  • Single accessible space corrections to van dimensions

Questions from Vega property owners

Can you separate the truck and car traffic on our lot?

That is usually the most valuable thing we can do on a fuel or travel property. It starts with walking the site and watching where the trucks actually go, which is frequently not where the original layout intended. Once the real path is understood, marking it and keeping car parking out of it is straightforward, and it reduces both the conflict and the pavement damage.

Paint keeps lifting in the fuel bays. Why?

Diesel and oil in the pavement. Traffic paint will not bond to a contaminated surface, and a general wash moves the surface film without touching what has soaked in. Those areas need degreasing and frequently a primer before anything goes over them. It is extra work and it is the difference between marking that lasts a few years and marking that peels within a season.

Is it worth you driving out for one small lot?

On its own, the mobilisation is a real share of the job at this distance, and we will say so. It works much better planned into a trip that covers other work along the I-40 corridor. If your job is not urgent, telling us that gives us room to fit it in.

Our lot only has one accessible space. Is that right?

For a lot up to 25 total spaces, one is the required number. What is worth checking is whether it is van accessible, because the ratio is one van space per six accessible spaces rounded up, and with a single accessible space that means it has to be the van one. We measure it on every quote.
