Amarillo Lot Striping supplies and installs wheel stops and bollards on Amarillo commercial property. Both are there to stop a vehicle reaching something, and both are frequently installed in a way that creates a different problem: a wheel stop set where people walk, or a bollard set where a delivery driver cannot see it.

Wheel stops: useful, and a trip hazard

A wheel stop earns its place where a vehicle overhanging the end of a stall would reach something it should not: a building wall, a glazed shopfront, a walkway narrower than the overhang, landscaping, or a utility. On an open stall backing onto more asphalt, it is doing nothing except sitting in the path of anyone walking between cars.

That is the trade-off. Wheel stops are a well-documented trip hazard, particularly at night and particularly for anyone walking diagonally across a lot, which is what everybody does. Our default advice is to use them where they solve a real reach problem and to leave them out everywhere else, rather than fitting them as a matter of course across a whole lot.

Setting them so they stay put

A wheel stop that has been nudged out of line looks worse than none at all, and it happens because of how it was fixed. Two steel pins driven through a precast stop into asphalt is the standard and it works, provided the pins are long enough for the asphalt thickness and the stop is bedded on a flat surface rather than rocking on a high spot.

The common failure is a stop fixed into a thin asphalt surface over a soft base, where the pins loosen and the stop starts to walk. On lots where that keeps happening the honest answer is usually that the pavement in that bay needs attention rather than that the stop needs longer pins.

Bollards, and the reason they keep getting hit

Bollards protect something specific: a gas meter, a fire riser, a transformer pad, a shopfront corner, a dock door jamb. A bollard that is repeatedly struck is usually one a driver genuinely cannot see from the seat of the vehicle that keeps hitting it, and the fix is visibility rather than a stronger bollard.

Height, colour and a reflective band do more than steel gauge in most cases. Where the striking vehicle is a truck reversing to a dock, a painted guide line on the pavement is often more effective than anything vertical.

Where bollards genuinely earn their place on a Amarillo lot:

Questions we get asked

Do we need wheel stops in every stall?

No, and fitting them everywhere is usually a mistake. They earn their place where an overhanging vehicle would reach something: a wall, glazing, a narrow walkway, landscaping or a utility. In an open stall backing onto more asphalt they are doing nothing but sitting in the path of pedestrians, and they are a recognised trip hazard. We would rather fit ten where they matter than eighty as a default.

Concrete or recycled wheel stops?

Concrete is heavier, cheaper and long-lived, and it chips at the corners, which is cosmetic rather than functional. Recycled rubber and plastic will not chip, weigh far less and are easier to reposition later, which matters if your layout is likely to change. On most Amarillo commercial lots concrete is the default and it is a perfectly good one.

How are wheel stops fixed down?

Into asphalt, with steel pins driven through cast holes, normally two per stop and sized to the thickness of the pavement. Into concrete, with anchor bolts or epoxy anchors, because pins will not hold. Either way the stop needs to bed flat rather than rock on a high spot, which is the thing most often skipped and the reason stops start to shift.

What size bollard do we need?

It depends entirely on what is being protected and from what. A bollard guarding a gas meter from a reversing delivery truck is a different specification from one marking the corner of a walkway. What matters as much as the steel is whether the driver can see it: height, colour and a reflective band prevent more strikes than gauge does.

Can you install these at the same time as the striping?

Yes, and it is the sensible sequence. Wheel stops should go in after the stalls are laid out rather than before, so they land centrally in the finished stall rather than in the one that used to be there. Bollards are best set before the final marking so that any guide lines can be painted around them.
